Abstract

An advanced concept for an electronically beam steering array operating in W-band is proposed in this paper. The reconfigurability is realized though tuning the orientation of liquid crystal molecules. An array of liquid crystal loaded unit cells are fed by a pillbox feeding network, which provides a plane wave guided inside a parallel plate waveguide. The desired aperture-field distribution and thus the beam direction can be controlled by assigning specific biasing voltages across the metamaterial unit cells. Simulation results show that the proposed array is capable of scanning from-37° to 45° with the realized gain higher than 18 dB.
