Abstract

In daily transit operations, how to reduce passengers waiting time as well as total bus service delays at bus stops always attracts transportation authority's attention. As a bus stop can always been used to serve multiple routes, the queueing is inevitable when the number of buses passing through the stop simultaneously is larger than the number of berths designed in the bus stop. In general, there are three most important factors that cause the queuing and bunching phenomena which are designed bus timetable, variation of on-road travel time and transit demand. A computer simulation tool is created and used to investigate the impact. Different passengers' arrival rates are tested to mimic the bus service time uncertainty. Different departure frequencies are also tested in the simulation tool to generate a uniform timetables which is fairly common in reality. In addition, three different rules of bus operation maneuvers are examined.
