Abstract
On July 4, Professor Douglas Bell was an invited keynote speaker at the 19th CLESOL conference ‘Back to the Future: Celebrating the past to shape the future’, at the University of Waikato, New Zealand.
Titled, ‘A Potted History of the Field of English for Academic Purposes (EAP). Some Critical Perspectives on a Promising Past, Turbulent Present and Uncertain Future’ Professor Bell provided an overview of EAP’s developmental trajectory, drawing attention to the discipline’s main strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
Professor Bell confirmed that EAP still has much to offer Higher Education and that the full potential of the discipline remains untapped.
