Abstract
A new framework has been developed which tracks the function of each unit operation as movements of points within the composition space of a mixture. Various physical and/or thermodynamics limitations/barriers to such movements are represented. In addition to serving as an aid in the selection and design of a separation system, this framework helps guide the assignment of effort in process research and development.
