Abstract
Coptis chinensis is one of the most commonly used Chinese herbal medicines. The annual production of Chinese herbal medicine residues in China reaches 60-70 million tons, which are typically disposed of by accumulation, landfilling, or incineration. These methods not only cause environmental pollution but also represent a waste of plant-based medical resources. This study used Coptis chinensis residues as the raw material, with Coptis chinensis powder as a control, and applied pyrolysis—a cleaner production technology characterized by "large-scale production potential and zero waste emission"—for processing. The research focused on the effects of pyrolysis mode and process parameters on the chemical composition of the resulting wood vinegar, and explored the possibility of preparing alkaloid medicines from Coptis chinensis residue wood vinegar. Experimental results confirmed the presence of substantial amounts of alkaloids in the wood vinegar derived from both Coptis chinensis and its residues. Under slow pyrolysis conditions, the total alkaloid concentration in CC400 was 16.61 mg/mL, with an extraction rate of 15.62%; in CCR400, the alkaloid concentration was 10.16 mg/mL, with an extraction rate of 9.55%. Analysis by LC-MS indicated that the organic compounds in Coptis chinensis wood vinegar contain approximately 16.8% alkaloids.
