As one of the first graduates of the University of Nottingham Ningbo (UNNC), Dr. Yiben Ma completed his undergraduate degree in International Communications Studies here in 2008. He obtained an MA in Cultural and Creative Industries from King’s College London and a PhD from the University of Leeds.
Before joining IC in September 2025, he taught and convened two Preliminary Year IC content module i.e. Media and Texts: Society and Media and Texts: Culture, at CELE from 2017.
He is also a two-time recipient of the Lord Dearing Award (both in team and individually) that recognises his outstanding contribution to the development of teaching and student learning.
Research Interests
His research interests mainly focus on political communication, including Chinese online nationalism, propaganda, social media and and critical discourse analysis. He also has keen research interest in the nexus of communication and sport, in particular the construction and negotiation of national identity in sport.
He is a co-editor for the Research Handbook on Political Propaganda (2021) and Routledge Handbook of Chinese Media Second Edition (2025)
