Dr Tyler Beckley is a practice-based researcher, filmmaker and educator whose work sits at the intersection of cinematic narration, the film frame and experimental horror cinema. He is currently a Teaching Fellow at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, where he teaches across film production, screen studies and research methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Tyler completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Communication and Media Arts at the University of Newcastle, Australia, where his doctoral research — The Enigmatic Frame: Staging the Unseen and Shaping the Mind — developed a practice-based inquiry into the film frame as a directorial tool for narrative ambiguity. His feature film Under the Red (2024), which he wrote, directed and produced, emerged from this research.
Prior to his appointment at UNNC, Tyler worked as an Associate Lecturer and Sessional Academic at the University of Newcastle, consistently achieving outstanding student feedback with a mean Quality Learning Experience rating of 4.9/5.0. He is committed to bridging theory and practice in the classroom and preparing students for professional careers in the media industries.
