Personal profile

Terence Lee is an established scholar of communication, media, culture, and politics. He started with the University of Nottingham as Professor in New Media, Communication and Cultural Studies in 2025 after spending 25 years as a media and communication academic at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia.

He is a Lifetime Member of the Asian Media and Information Centre (AMIC); and has been a member of the International Communication Association (ICA), International Association of Media and Communication Researchers (IAMCR), the Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Communication Association (AANZCA), Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA), and the Malaysia and Singapore Studies Association of Australia (MASSA). He was President of AANZCA in 2013-14, and held executive roles for many years.

He has been closely involved in journal publications for many years. From 2022-2024, he was Editor-in-Chief of Communication Research and Practice journal (published by Routledge and ANZCA), where he is now the Managing Editor. He is also the Essay Editor of Asian Journal of Communication (another important Communication journal published by Routledge). For several years, he was the Media/Culture Editor of Asian Studies Review (Routledge).

He sits on the Editorial Boards of:

  • Continuum: Journal of Media and Cultural Studies (Routledge)
  • Media International Australia (Sage)
  • Asia Pacific Media Educator (Sage) - ceased publication in 2021

Prior to joining UNNC, Terence was the Professor of Communication and Politics and Inaugural Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sheridan Institute, a private start-up university-provider, in Australia for 3 years between 2022-2024.  

Industry background: Prior to completing his PhD and entering academia, Terence was a Media Policy Executive with the former Singapore Broadcasting Authority (now known as the Info-Comm Media Development Authority or iMDA) in the mid-1990s. During this time, he was involved in pivotal research and policy framing around the transitioning of national broadcasting from analogue to digital systems. He also had a brief stint as a media journalist in Singapore in the 1990s.

Terence's research interests cut across new media, communication and cultural studies (hence his job title!) - but specifically, his work would typically revolve around the following topics/sub-disciplines:

  • Digital Governance: New media, Global Internet and AI policy;
  • Southeast Asian media, culture and politics, with a focus on Singapore (and Malaysia);
  • Discourses on creativity and the creative industries;
  • Political communication and the politics of media systems;
  • Michel Foucault: governmentality, pastoral power, art(s) and technologies of governing;
  • Cultural and media policy;
  • Critical theory and methods. 

Terence is a seasoned PhD and higher degrees by research supervisor, and has examined in excess of 25 PhD/MPhil theses from around the world.
