Dr. Sherif Welsen is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), where he has been a committed academic leader and educator since 2013. A champion of student success and academic innovation, Dr. Welsen served as the Campus Lead Senior Tutor from 2023 to 2025 and holds the role of Faculty Senior Tutor for Science and Engineering, steering institutional efforts to enhance student advising, engagement, and holistic development.
Recognized for his excellence in teaching and academic leadership, Dr. Welsen is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and the first member of the University of Nottingham to be acknowledged by the UK Advising and Tutoring (UKAT) with the distinction of Recognised Senior Advisor (RSA). His contributions to student learning were further honored with the Lord Dearing Award in 2019.
An interdisciplinary scholar and founder of the Science and Engineering Education Research Group at UNNC, Dr. Welsen has played a pivotal role in shaping the faculty’s teaching and learning strategies. From 2017 to 2021, he served as both Deputy Director and Director of Teaching and Learning, leading curriculum design, pedagogical innovation, and the integration of research into teaching practice.
Dr. Welsen’s academic journey spans multiple continents. Prior to joining UNNC, he held research and teaching appointments in Egypt and China, including roles as a scientist in Shenzhen, assistant professor in Cairo, and associate lecturer and researcher from 2004 to 2010. He holds a master’s degree from the Arab Academy for Science and Technology and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Ain Shams University.
His research bridges technical and pedagogical domains, with contributions to emerging wireless technologies, location estimation, digital chip design, and advanced coding techniques. He also leads pioneering work in engineering education, exploring digital transformation in learning, blended pedagogy, and the impact of AI on assessment and academic integrity.
With a global perspective and a future-facing mindset, Dr. Welsen continues to push the boundaries of engineering education through research, innovation, and dedicated academic service.
