Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics
Research activity per year
I am an assistant professor of applied linguistics in the School of Education and English at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC). Before joining UNNC, I served as a research assistant professor at the Education University of Hong Kong from 2023 to 2025. It was in Hong Kong where I investigated methods for localizing content-integrated language instruction in trilingual settings and fostering sustainable collaboration between EMI universities in Asia.
Since 2022, I have published eight articles in top Q1 academic journals, including English Today, Foreign Language Annals, TESOL Quarterly, and System. I have also co-guest edited four special issues (Australian Journal of Applied Linguistics, Chinese Journal of Applied Linguistics, Linguistics and Education, RELC Journal) on various issues such as the EMI policies in Transnational Higher Education Institutions, Developing and maintaining sustainable collaboration between EMI institutions in Asia, and the emotional impact of EMI policy in Higher Education. I am currently co-editing a book with Cambridge University Press on language ideologies in education.
My research and teaching interests are intertwined. My main area of study focuses on language ideologies in pre- and in-service teachers, utilizing case study and ethnographic approaches. Other strands of research focus on how language policies at higher education institutions impact stakeholders to learn, teach, and administrate. I specifically focus on the following areas:
Equitable language education| Multilingual policy and implementation| Language identity and ideology | Teacher training and development| (In)equity in language, race, and social class| World Englishes.
My research informs my teaching, enabling me to prepare future language teachers to leverage students' linguistic and cultural resources and promote equitable learning in their classrooms. I am currently teaching Applied Linguistics and TESOL (EDEN 4001) and Developments in Language Teaching Methodology (EDEN 4002) in the MA TESOL program.
